More about
Tom
Tom co-founded Loqbox in 2017 with a belief that the financial system should do a better job of recognising people’s potential — not simply judging them on where they are today.
That belief shapes Tom’s approach to credit. He argues that building credit shouldn’t be about chasing a number on a screen. It should help people demonstrate the conscientious, consistent financial behaviour that can make them better borrowers and give lenders a clearer picture of their reliability.
Tom is particularly interested in people Loqbox describes as "pre-prime”: people who may be financially responsible but whose potential isn’t yet fully reflected in their credit history. This includes people with little credit history as well as those whose past financial difficulties may not reflect where they’re heading now.
Through his work, Tom explores consumer credit, responsible borrowing, credit building, financial inclusion and mortgage readiness, as well as how psychology influences the way people think, feel and behave around money.
Tom is a member of the Credit Information Governance Body (CIGB) Remedies Advisory Council, which oversees the industry-led work arising from the FCA's Credit Information Market Study. It shapes what comes next for the UK’s credit information system, with a clear focus on improving outcomes for both consumers and lenders. Tom champions the idea that credit data should capture real behaviour, real progress, and real potential, to create opportunities for consumers, lenders, other participants and the wider economy as a whole.
In 2026, Tom was shortlisted for Scale-Up Entrepreneur of the Year at the Allica Bank Great British Entrepreneur Awards, recognising his work building Loqbox and tackling financial exclusion.
He’s also a strong advocate for making financial education work harder in real life. Tom believes people need practical guidance that reflects their circumstances, motivations and relationship with money.
Tom helps consumers build better financial habits, helps responsible lenders recognise good potential borrowers, and challenges the industry to create a financial system that gives more people a fair opportunity to move forward.

’s top financial tips
1. Check all three of your credit reports: Each credit reference agency works out its own score from the information it holds about you, and they don’t always hold the same information. That’s why it’s worth checking all three reports for accuracy. Checking for mistakes is probably the most important first step to improving your creditworthiness.
2. Build up an emergency fund: You don’t need to build a huge emergency fund straight away. Start with what you can afford and build it over time. Having some money available when something unexpected happens can help you avoid having to borrow to cover it, and give you a bit more financial resilience when you need it.
3. Look at what your debt is costing you: If you’re paying a high rate of interest on debt, it’s worth looking at whether paying that down should come before building up more savings. I’d still keep something available for emergencies, but there’s not much benefit in earning a few per cent on savings while paying 20% or 30% interest elsewhere.
In the Press

"It’s far more important to understand what’s in your report and what shapes it, rather than a specific band or number, as it’s those pieces of information that credit providers actually look at.”

"The thing I would like to see banished is the common acceptance that the best we can do for people is to give them a high-cost credit card and hope that they won't mess it up.”

"Look beyond labels: Treat scores as a starting point, rather than a verdict. Focus on behaviours, stability and direction of travel.”
